News just broke that the Eagles are extending Saquon Barkley for 2 years at $41m with $36m guaranteed. This was the extension none of us knew we needed.
Quick recap. Barkley just put up one of the greatest seasons of all time while contending for MVP and winning the Super Bowl in his first year in Philadelphia. Unbelievable stuff. Despite signing the biggest free agent running back deal in forever, he out ran that contract by a mile. At 3/$37.75m, he was underpaid.
The new deal adds 2 years to the previous contract which still had around $24m left. His cap hit was scheduled to be around $7.5m this season with the big nut due in 2027 after the original contract was due to expire. There were 4 void years on the old deal which keep the yearly hit low.
It’s safe to assume at least 4 are on the end of this deal as well. What this does is instead of prorating his bonus and options over 6 years, it will probably be over at least 8. 4 contract years and 4 void years. Everything drops.
When the signing bonus is announced (I’m guessing it’s like $20m) we will know exactly how much is prorated per season, probably around 2.5m. His yearly salaries will likely come in the form of an option bonus, probably around $10m and $11m each for 2027 and 2028. These will be prorated over the approximately 6 and 5 years remaining.
I will update when more info comes out. Too excited and I can barely type right now!!!
