The Phillies made 20 selections in the 2025 MLB Draft and signed their first 19 picks. The final one, Landon Scheffer, was a shot in the dark to sign, but will go to Arkansas instead of Philadelphia. Let’s take a quick look at everyone including the reported bonuses:
For a primer on how this all works, click here.
– Gage Wood – Pitcher – Arkansas – $3,000,000 (underslot by $492,200): The guy who threw the 19K no-hitter in the World Series. His fastball is a weapon.
– Cade Obermueller – Pitcher – Iowa – $1,197,500 (underslot by $292,100): Dirty lefty side-armer who will begin as a starter but could probably be an MLB reliever right now.
– Cody Bowker – Pitcher – Vanderbilt – $700,000 (underslot by $65,400): Combo of the first two. Righty side-armer with a filthy fastball but needs work on everything else. Starter upside, solid reliever downside.
– Sean Youngerman – Pitcher – Oklahoma State – $564,500 (underslot $2,500): Huge solid dude (6’3″ 230 pounds) who can start or relieve. Has excellent control with a mid 90s fastball.
– Gabe Craig – Pitcher – Baylor – $197,500 (underslot by $225,200): Brian Barber (Phillies Assistant GM in charge of the Draft) says his slider was probably the best pitch in college baseball this year. 51:3 K:BB ratio. Almost unhittable. There’s a chance he makes it to the majors this season.
– James Tallon – Pitcher – Duke – $325,300 (underslot by $2,500): Loved by Phillies scouts, but did progressively worse as his college career went on.
– Matthew Fisher – Pitcher – Memorial High School Evansville, IN – $1,250,000 (overslot by $992,300): The big high school get this season. Fisher was an unbelievable QB who the Phillies bought out of his commitment.
– Brian Walters – Pitcher – The U – $309,400 (overslot by $94,300): Reliever who will be fast tracked to the majors as early as next season. Mid 90s fastball with TJ in his background.
– Matthew Ferrera – Shortstop – Toms River East High School, NJ – $597,500 (overslot by $399,900): Local boy Phillies fan who can hit.
– Cole Gilley – Pitcher – Indiana – $7,500 (underslot by $179,800): Guy has a cool story of always wanting to pitch for Indiana and after some twists and turns, finally did. Probably just a guy.
– Will Vierling – Catcher – Murray State – $150,000: Matt’s cousin! Good hitting catcher but was on the wrong end of Wood’s no-hitter. The Phillies desperately need catchers.
– Tyler Bowen – Pitcher – Lander University – $150,000: Reliever post TJ who can get it up to 99.
– Jack Barker – Outfielder – College of Southern Idaho – $150,000: JuCo kid from nowheresville Idaho can do a bit of everything.
– Jonathan Gonzalez – Pitcher – Stetson University – $50,000: Miami kid who can light up a radar gun. He started in college, but expect him to be transitioned immediately into a high leverage reliever.
– Jacob Pruitt – Pitcher – Mississippi State University – $150,000: His work in the 1973 Bulova watch catalog made me want to become a male model. His numbers last year were bad, but he strikes out a lot of guys.
– Logan Dawson – Shortstop – Eastern High School NJ – estimated at $250,000: Overslot late high school pick who the Phillies convinced not to go to Boston College. Great choice. 3rd ranked SS in NJ.
– Richie Cortese – Pitcher – Lander University (again) – $150,000: Huge pitcher (6’6″ 240 pounds) who used to play first base with a crazy journey from Montana to North Dakota to South Carolina and now to Philadelphia (hopefully).
– Matthew Potok – Pitcher – Coastal Carolina – $150,000: Another local kid who seems like an organizational filler reliever type.
– Robert Phelps – Pitcher – Reinhardt University – $75,000: Athletic kid who bounced around 3 different JuCos. Can do a little bit of everything.
Special thanks to Matt Winkleman and his Phillies Minor Thoughts Draft Tracker. He’s the best with Phillies minor league…ummm…ing
