Ok, this is it. Today at 6pm EST is the MLB a Trade Deadline. I’ll be updating throughout the day.

7pm: Looks like I missed one. The Phillies picked up Matt Manning from the Tigers who had been DFA’d. Making is a once promising prospect who has spent most of his career injured. The Phillies have themselves a great medical staff though, so a nice flyer on a talented (no longer) kid.

6:10pm: PENCILS DOWN!!! The deadline has come and gone with some final deals going down. The Yankees were big winners today adding Camilo Duval from the Giants who seem to have given up.

The Rays picked up Griffin Jax from Minnesota but finally gave up on Curtis Mead in a different trade, getting Adrian Houser from Chicago. You may remember that Mead was a Phillies prospect that we traded for Cristopher Sanchez. Everyone thought we blew that trade when Mead was rising up prospect lists. The Phillies take the W in the end.

Phillies finish with just two moves, Harrison Bader and Jhoan Duran. That’s fine. Expect other roster moves to come today or tomorrow including the promotion of Justin Crawford and/or Andrew Painter. Full write up tomorrow.

One more move… Shelby Miller to the Brewers. They made one move and it was a good one. Damnit.

5:30pm: The Rangers get our old nemesis Merrill Kelly from the Diamondbacks. They now go deGrom, Eovaldi, and Kelly if they make the playoffs. Why do we care? Because he didn’t go to the Cubs, Mets, or Dodgers

4:45pm: AJ Preller continues to be an absolute crazy person. The Padres just traded for Ramon Laureano and Ryan O’Hearn from the Orioles. The Phillies were in on both of them earlier but O’Hearn only made sense if Bryce Harper was going to the outfield. Their farm is destroyed but they got much better today. Earlier they traded for Freddy Fermin, a catcher from the royals. Bonkers day in San Diego.

4:15pm: UPDATE, looks like the Garcia deal to the Mets isn’t real. Sorry about that. Too much was happening and I just went with it. Carlos Correa to the Astros is very real though!

4pm: Mets just traded for Adolis Garcia from the Rangers and the Yankees got Jake Bird from the Rockies. Bird was electric most of the season, but the Rockies have really run him into the ground. Garcia is the former world series MVP who has basically imploded since then. The Mets are taking a gamble that he heats up under the bright lights. They aren’t wrong!

3:45pm: The Mets are getting Cedric Mullins to play centerfield. I’ll be honest, for weeks I’ve tried to convince myself that the Phillies should get Mullins, but he stinks. He’s been pretty terrible this season at the plate. It’s still good for the Mets considering his defense is still good and is an upgrade over Tyrone Taylor, but I think Bader is better than him all things considered.

The funny part is that this might mean there are no more suitors left for Luis Robert Jr. If the White Sox overplayed their hand and have to keep him, that’s hilarious. Just a terrible non move on their part. You don’t just not move a player on an expiring contract when you suck.

3pm: Yankees are getting David Bednar from the Pirates. He has a year of control left and hasn’t given up a run since mid May. Their bullpen has fallen off a cliff this season despite trading for Devin Williams in the offseason. The haul is Rafael Flores (Yankees #9), and two more prospects. I’ll update as soon as Jeff Passan does his job that I’m trying to take credit for…

Ok, thanks John Heyman. The final haul is Flores, Edgleen Perez (#14) and Brian Sanchez.

1:15pm: Phillies get Harrison Bader...yeah. If you couldn’t tell, that was sarcastic. I just don’t like him. The price isn’t nothing considering we gave up outfielder Hendry Mendez and pitcher Geremy Villoria. Bader bats righty but has pretty equal splits on the season. For his career he is better against lefties though. He doesn’t kill them like Robert does, but is a solid mid .700s OPS guy. He is a plus defender in left and center, higher than Marsh but below Rojas. I’ll try to get myself excited during the full write up.

As for the prospects, Mendez was ranked 12th in the system, but really 14 considering yesterday’s trade. Mendez is 21 and was orignally signed by the Brewers for $800k 4 years ago. I think he was part of a 40 man roster crunch and traded to the Phillies in the offseason. He was having a very solid yeari n Reading with an .800 OPS. All I know about Villoria is that he is 16 and signed for $425k last year.

11:35am: Sweet merciful crap! The Padres just got Mason Miller and JP Sears from the A’s. That’s not the shocking part. The Padres traded the #3 prospect in all of baseball to get them, Leo de Vries, an 18 year old shortstop in High A. Prospects like him simply do not get traded. That’s not all either. Braden Nett (Padres #3), Henry Baez (#13), and Eduarnial Nunez (#17) are going to the A’s. This is a ballsy move by San Diego for pitching. We’ll have to see what happens the rest of the day with them. Are they adding to a staff with Dylan Cease and Robert Suarez, or are those guys out the door. I told you their GM was a lunatic.

The great part of this for the Phillies is the difference in price between what the Padres just paid and what we paid for Jhoan Duran. The difference between two top 50-100 prospects and the #3 overall prospect is exponential. You can’t even claim Miller is an upgrade over Duran. When the ask of Andrew Painter was out there from Not-Oakland we laughed. David First and Billy Beane was not joking.

10am (8 hours to go): The Blue Jays are really going for it, getting Shane Bieber from Cleveland. Bieber just came back from injury and came out firing. In 2 starts he’s gone 12 innings with 20 Ks and 1 walk. We care because he did not go to the Mets, Cubs, or Dodgers. If he did, I would be playing up his injury history.

9:20am: Bob Nightingale has the Phillies linked to the Cardinals trio of Lars Nootbar, Alec Burleson, and Brendan Donovan. While all 3 have proved to be solid regulars, none can hit lefties even a little bit. Bob is not the most reliable of reporters in that he often makes connections to things that are plausible, but that’s no better than me giving a report without any knowledge. Take the Cardinals link with a grain of salt as it doesn’t seem to be a real “report”

8am (10 hours to go): At around midnight the Mariners traded for Eugenio Suarez, ending the Phillies pursuit. In return they received 3 good but not top 100 level prospects. That hopefully sets today’s price for bats at something reasonable.

The Phillies and Mets beefed up their bullpens with Jhoan Duran coming to Philly and Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rodgers going to Queens. Both are in pursuit of an outfield bat today and have been linked to Luis Robert Jr. Dave Dombrowski said yesterday that the Phillies are done with the bullpen but are in pursuit of a bat.

Arizona is going to have a busy day with Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly still on the roster despite no team control left. Today doesn’t have to be a fire sale, but that’s probably preferable to going the comp pick route or trying to resign both guys. The Mets, Cubs, and Dodgers should be in on the starters.

Ryan O’Hearn of the Orioles is having a crazy good season but can’t hit lefties a lick. Baltimore is already selling so he is good as gone. There’s a legit chance he would take a qualifying offer so that probably kills that option. Cedric Mullins is likely on the move as well but is having a pretty terrible year.

The Padres are dangling Dylan Cease despite being in the playoff hunt. It’s not crazy even if their GM is a certified lunatic. They are not going to resign him so they would rather get a haul while retooling on the fly.

Late last night Mason Miller was not brought into a close game in the 9th. John Heyman had the A’s and Padres in deep talks on the star flame thrower.

The Braves have to sell right? Marcell Ozuna is in the final year if his deal and I can’t imagine the Braves want to bring him back. There’s an outside shot he would accept a qualifying offer as well considering he’s an aging DH.
