DeVonta Smith celebrates with AJ Brown after scoring a touchdown for the Eagles

Eagles 5 Year Plan: Offense

The Eagles have constructed a powerhouse on offense and defense that is signed for the foreseeable future. How foreseeable? Let’s go through a year-by-year review of when these contracts are up and when we could see an extension. Offense today, defense later this week.

2025 (Players in the last year of their contract)

  • Dallas Goedert: Goedert took a little bit of a discount in order to stay in Philly for one more year, but that doesn’t mean he won’t cost a lot next year. Currently, his dead cap hit is set to be $20.5m. Despite this past offseason being tumultuous for the team and tight end, there is a world where they bring him back on a lesser contract depending on his production this season. If not, he is destined to be a post-June 1 cut which will split his cap hit to $7.5m in 2026 and $13m in 2027.
  • Jahan Dotson: Dotson is in the final year of his contract and most likely will not be back next season unless he takes a minimum contract. With a roster so tight on funds going forward, WR3 is an easy place to not spend money.
  • Kenyon Green: No one wants to think about it right now, but Green’s spot on this team may have just become critical as we wait for news on the Landon Dickerson injury. At the very least, he just became an important backup. If Green is called into action and excels, don’t expect him to be back for the same reasons Mekhi Becton was not resigned. If he is adequate, I can see a 1-year deal to protect their investment in his skills. If he doesn’t see the field and is passed on the depth chart, he might not last the season.
  • Grant Calcaterra, Kylen Granson, Kendall Lam, Matt Pryor, Avery Williams, Harrison Bryant, AJ Dillon, Brett Toth, Nick Muse, Terrace Marshall, Darian Kinnard, EJ Jenkins, Elijah Cooks, Cameron Latu, Ife Adeyi, Laekin Vakahali: All of these guys are on 1-year contracts and cut either be cut in 2 weeks, make the team, or break out in some way to make themselves interesting. No one really knows at the moment.
  • Pre-Season Extension Candidates: Cam Jurgens was the guy, and Cam Jurgens got his deal.

2026 (2 years left)

  • Tanner McKee: OOOOHHHHH Baby! The Tanner McKee hype train has left the station and is heading toward next offseason like the Denzel movie Unstoppable. For all those people yelling DON’T TRADE HIM, I don’t know what to tell you. They are not going to trade him this season, but before next year he is as good as gone. They have to deal him. His going price right now is a 1st round pick, and that is likely only going up. He is not going to take the job from Jalen Hurts unless something truly awful happens. Remember, this is a QB Factory.
  • Tyler Steen: Steen is making close to the minimum these next 2 years. There is a world where he is a capable starter (but not Pro Bowl level) and the Eagles act quickly to get him signed to a decent extension in the $5m-$10m AAV range. If he isn’t up for that, the Eagles would be content to let him have another season on the cheap, get even better, and nab the team a solid compensatory pick. From there, you let Stoutland do his job and teach the next guy.
  • Dorian Thompson-Robinson: His destiny is likely the practice squad in 2025, I don’t see the Eagles keeping 4 QBs.
  • Pre-Season Extension Candidates: Tyler Steen is eligible before the season for the first time. The Eagles would be dumb not to engage in some kind of early, below market extension talk. Whether Steen is interested probably depends on his performance trajectory of the 2025 season.

2027 (3 years left)

  • Lane Johnson: The proud warrior said he will retire when his contract is up, which means we have another year to seriously consider his succession plan. Assuming his retirement comes at this time, he will still have around $40.5m in dead cap left unaccounted for. This means his post-June 1 cut cap hits will be $17.5m in 2028 and $23m in 2029. The plan is to have his replacement making close to the league minimum.
  • Will Shipley: Is there a world where Will Shipley takes off and gets an extension? Both? Probably not. Saquon Barkley may be slowing down by this point, so you are probably thinking why not Shipley. Because Saquon was the exception to the rule. Unless Shipley becomes a Saquon-esque talent (not likely), he will not be given an extension. Always remember with the Eagles, they extend greatness, not goodness. Unless it’s someone like Saquon, the running back position will always be replaceable. No offense to Shipley and I hope he gets us a comp pick.
  • Ainias Smith: Goodbye. I don’t think he makes the 2025 team.
  • Johnny Wilson: I didn’t think he would make the 2025 roster until I saw what he did in the pre-season. It would probably be in his best interest to gain some size and switch to tight end. That would be interesting.
  • Trevor Keegan: Off to a bad and injured start to the preseason. He looks like a practice squad guy.
  • Darius Cooper: Well hello Mr. Cooper. He was so off the grid that I didn’t even have anything for him in my Draft recap going into the season. That didn’t stop him from showing out against the Bengals though. He still might not even make the team this year (he will), but if he does you are looking at next year’s WR3. We’ll see what happens.
  • Hollin Pierce: This is a gross simplification, but he is either not playing a snap in the NFL or will be the replacement for Lane Johnson. He has incredible size and if he takes to Jeff Stoutland’s coaching then the Eagles will stash him on the roster to go into deep study in the Honors Program at Stoutland U. The Eagles probably hope to stash him on the Practice Squad either way in 2025.
  • Pre-Season Extension Candidates: Pierce and Cooper are incredible long shots, but not 0% odds. The real possible preseason extension candidate is Jalen Hurts. DeVonta Smith and Jordan Mailata are solid early extension candidates as well.

2028 (4 years left)

  • Jalen Hurts: If he is not extended in 2027, it will definitely happen prior to the 2028 season. He will turn 30 just prior to the start of the season and will have at least 1 more big contract left in him. This is a no-brainer and will look to be the highest paid player in football when the deal is signed. He is a Top 5 QB in football and a proven winner. Nothing to overthink.
  • DeVonta Smith: If you don’t already know, DeVonta Smith is the heart and soul of this football team. He is all business and never, EVER complains while openly cheering on his teammates and their individual pursuits. He does this while taking a huge discount in salary. If at any point he goes to Howie and asks for a raise, he will get one. That being said, he will be 29 before the 2028 season. His game relies on precision rather than speed or power, so he will likely age very well. Honestly, whatever he wants, whenever he wants.
  • Saquon Barkley: He will be 31 at the start of the 2028 season and is not likely to see another extension (unless he really is Superman). Hell, it is even possible that he is released after 2027. If he makes it to the end of the contract, that’s a $17m cap hit in 2028 then $12.5m in 2029 and $19m in 2030 to not play. However, a 2027 release means an $10.5m-ish cap hit in 27 and $15m-ish in 28. It just depends on how special he is in 2027.
  • Jordan Mailata: Mailata signed a very early second extension that doesn’t even kick in until 2026. That means he is a huge bargain despite being one of the league’s elite talents. His cap hit in 2028 is only $20m with $35m waiting in the wings as dead cap. He will be 31 to start the season. Assuming he does not extend super early again (though that is a bad assumption) and maintains his standing as the top LT in the league, expect him to get a 4th contract.
  • Landon Dickerson: As I type this, all of Philadelphia is waiting with baited breath as to the extent of Dickerson’s knee injury from open practice last night. Dickerson has not been the paragon of health in his football career but is an elite guard when he plays (not to mention being an all-time locker room guy). If his legs continue to be trouble, his contract is designed to be released at any point after 2026. His $19m-ish option bonuses for 2027 and 2028 must be exercised before the start of each regular season. Those could be easy decisions one way or another.
  • Kyle McCord: We currently have no idea what McCord is, but his position is likely pretty clear. He is a developmental 3rd string in 2025. Assuming any bit of handle on the offense this season he moves up to the back up next season once Tanner McKee is traded. The hope is that McCord can have a similar trajectory and get traded himself eventually. Again, the QB Factory (assuming you held out on clicking last time but made it this far).
  • Drew Kendall, Myles Hinton, Cameron Williams: None of these guys have played a snap yet, so I won’t prognosticate. I will say that Drew Kendall is expected to be a high level back up to Cam Jurgens. That probably won’t earn him an extension with the team unless the worst happens with Jurgens. Hinton is likely viewed as a low upside but solid swing tackle in the NFL. Williams is in the same position as Hollin Pierce above. I am sure the team would like to keep both of them, with Williams likely making the team and Pierce making the Practice Squad.
  • Pre-Season Extension Candidates: DeVonta Smith and Mailata are givens unless they already resigned the previous year with Jalen Hurts. Dickerson depends a lot on health and performance. Though I sounded higher on Pierce earlier than Williams now, that’s only because I did not want to write the same words again. Think of them as 2 tickets to the same lottery.

2029 (5 years left)

  • AJ Brown: Some talking head recently claimed that the Eagles will look to trade AJ Brown sooner or later. Granted, that is usually what happens to elite wide receivers, but the narrative around AJ Brown has never really matched Brown himself. The Eagles have done an incredible job of keeping him happy and he has done nothing but reward this treatment. That being said, the final guaranteed year in his contract is only in 2026. Will he be happy with $84m over 2027-29? He will be 30 when that run begins. Those are great numbers for the Eagles assuming he maintains production. It is all up to Brown basically. If he demands to be paid $45m per season come 2026, the Eagles might not be willing to do that.
  • Cam Jurgens: The most recent extender is a good place to stop, right? His cap hit in 2029 will only be $16m…crazy good. He will have $29m in dead cap after that, but an extension will smooth that out, assuming he wants to keep playing.
  • Pre-Season Extension Candidates: Jurgens. If he becomes the next Kelce, he will be fully in charge of his destiny.
