Tyree Wilson gets drafted too high

NFL Trade Deadline Primer Week 5: Post Hype Prospects

The NFL Trade Deadline is November 4th at 4pm, about 4 weeks away. It’s not nearly as active as in other sports, but the Eagles especially are always looking to make moves. Each week we are going to look at the worst teams in the league to see if there is anyone worth pilfering.

Over the last few weeks, we have gone over some higher priced vets and pre-extension trade targets. Now it’s time to look at the post-hype prospects. These are the guys who have disappointed for one reason or another in their drafted homes but were taken high for a reason. Consider these the “change of scenery” types. This will double as an early look at sleeper free agent targets this offseason.

Tyree Wilson – EDGE – Raiders

We Eagles fans owe a lot to Tyree Wilson. The 6’6″ defensive end somehow convinced the Raiders to select him 7th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. The pick should have been Jalen Carter without question. The Raiders are the Raiders though and they have 10 career sacks in 5 career starts to show for it. The thing about Wilson is his size. He’s tall with incredibly long arms and a lot of power. You can’t teach any of that. There is still the possibility of an elite sack artist in that frame. He is only in his 3rd year, so this is an investment property, not a rental.

Myles Murphy – EDGE – Bengals

Another guy from the 2023 draft, Murphy was selected 28th out of Clemson. He was considered a finished product coming out of school ready to put up solid numbers. Consider him a Derek Barnett type in that regard. He wishes he had Barnett’s production though. He has started once in his career and only has 4.5 sacks. His MO coming out of school was that he may not be the fastest, but he has a never-ending motor. That seems like a solid rotational add to this pass rush.

Evan Neal – Guard – Giants

Evan Neal looked like a perfect offensive lineman coming out of Alabama. He was huge and incredibly agile. He went to the Giants and inexplicably fell completely on his face. Now he isn’t even dressing. Unless necessity forces their hand, I cannot imagine he is still with the Giants by November 5th. Get him on the practice squad and enrolled in Stoutland University please. He has too much talent to die at the Meadowlands.

Mazi Smith – DT – Cowboys

The former 2023 first rounder is barely playing in Dallas. He still has elite size and strength though. I know we already have Jordan Davis who is a lot better, but Smith wouldn’t cost anything to invest in and be a break glass in case of emergency type. Dallas has basically already given up on him.

Derick Hall – EDGE – Seahawks

The former 2023 2nd round pick looked to break out last season after a miserable rookie year but is back in the doghouse in Seattle. He is very fast with long arms and has serious explosion (based on his elite broad jump). In everything I have read, he is apparently a beloved teammate too. Hall is currently injured with an oblique injury, but with all of the guys Seattle has to pay coming up, they might look to move Hall.

BJ Ojulari – EDGE – Cardinals

The younger brother of Azeez has been injured the last 2 years and is still on the PUP list to start this season. The Cardinals are not expecting anything of him and will probably release him at some point. Considering he was a high second round pick, he would be someone to take a flyer on once (if) he is cleared to play again. Assuming it’s not lost, he was known to be an athletic pass rusher with all the flexibility, strength, and speed to excel. There was raw talent here at one point.

Cam Smith – CB – Dolphins

Smith was just waived by the Dolphins after a miserable career so far. He was taken 51st overall back in 2023 after a very solid combine performance. This means that Vic Fangio with the Dolphins saw something in him he liked at the time. The trouble has never been his athletic ability, but rather having the right technique in his craft that never improved. Still, you can’t teach athletic ability. Might be worth a trip to the practice squad right now.

Treylon Burks – WR – Titans

Burks may or may not still be on the Titans depending on who you ask (which is odd) but he is officially cleared to play from a broken collarbone. Burks may have never had a chance in this league thanks to injuries and basically being traded for AJ Brown, but he was also drafted 18th overall back in 2022. He has the size and strength to be an NFL receiver. It would be objectively hilarious for Howie to bring him in during all of the AJ Brown drama.

David Ojabo – EDGE – Ravens

Ojabo’s career has been derailed by injury ever since he declared for the NFL draft. He is not under contract next year but is finally at least playing, though not very much. As he continues to get his feet back following multiple Achillies injuries, he may have something left to give…but may also be a shell of himself. The next few weeks on the injury depleted Ravens will tell us a lot.

Anthony Richardson – QB – Colts

It is pretty clear that the Colts are done with Richardson. Losing your job to Daniel Jones is about as damning as possible outside of just being cut. Throw in Danny Dimes playing well in the same offense and Richardson’s time in Indy has come to an end. Richardson was drafted #4 overall in 2023 for a reason though, he is an athletic specimen. Getting him into a new situation as a backup QB could really help him develop without the pressure of being a team’s savior. The thing about Richardson is that he may simply need more reps. He was a 1-year starter in high school, a 1-year starter in Gainesville, and has only played 15 games in the NFL. He is still only 23 years old too.

With Jalen Hurts the established #1, and Tanner McKee the waiting-to-be-traded-this-offseason backup, bringing in Richardson on the cheap wouldn’t be a bad move. He has way more upside than Sam Howell.
