With an arbitration hearing scheduled for next week and the Leo Carlsson offer sheet squarely in the rear view mirror, the Flyers and center Trevor Zegras have agreed to a 4/$36.5m extension. This is great news.
The deal comes in slightly below the $10m per year I had projected but still keeps the 25 year old former Duck in Philadelphia until his age 29 season. These next 4 years seem to be the window of contention for both the old guard of the Travises, Dan Vladar, and hopefully the blossoming of Porter Martone and Matvei Michkov.
The deal might have a little sticker shock for some but considering the rising cap, this is very solid. This puts the team at right around $21m in cap space with Zegras now the highest paid player on the team. Even if Zegras stays a a point per game pace over the length of the deal, with the rising cap, this will look like a steal as soon as next year. He will be eligible for an extension on July 1, 2029… but who’s counting?
