This was supposed to be something I added to throughout the day. After things started so positively with Luis Arraez and Brooks Raley, I mistakenly expected things to continue to get better. Surely, they would not move around the entire infield and make the defense worse, right? What a fool I was. Let’s just get to Raely and I’ll be pissed off about the rest later.
Brooks Raley for Jonathan Spikerman and Luke Gabrysh
Though the lower key of the two early day moves, the Raley addition will have the same effect on the bullpen that Arraez will have on the lineup because everyone will get pushed down to their rightful positions in the bullpen hierarchy. While Jhoan Duran is a legitimate closer with the 9th inning locked, who did you feel comfortable with for the 8th? Anyone? Not anymore.
Raley should easily slot into the setup role as a lefty. While he isn’t a big swing and miss guy, he is all about weak contact. If his 1.96 ERA this season doesn’t put you at ease, well his 2.31 over the last 4 years with the Mets should make you feel pretty good. This allows Jose Alvarado and Tim Mayza to be more of lefty-pocket middle inning guys. Caleb Killian will join Jonathan Bowlan and Orion Kerkering in the righty mix for the 7th.
Raley will make around $1.4m for the rest of the season, a pro rated amount from his $4.75m salary
The players we gave up are not considered huge prospects. Jonathan Spikerman is a 23-year-old outfielder who has been fine in High A this year and is known for his speed. He was a 3rd round pick out of Oklahoma two years ago. Gabrysh is a local kid drafted out of St. Joes in 2024 who has fantastic strike out numbers, especially for a starter, but is also 23 in High A. His problem is a lot of HRs and a lot of walks but there is certainly some arm talent here.
Manuel Colon and cash for Nolan Hoffman
The Phillies DFA’s Hoffman, but get something for nothing with this trade. Colon is only 150 pounds and 5’11, but he is 19 years old with some good strikeout numbers in the Complex League. Have not heard anything about his arsenal, but I’ll find it
