Welcome to the first annual 4 For 4 challenge pitting the nation’s 12 cities with all 4 major professional sports teams against each other to see which is the best. Scoring is simple. We take the records of each team to see where they are in the standings, factor in playoff standings, give a bonus point for being a champion, and see who averages out the best. Results will be posted at the first of every month then averaged out at the end to see which team is the best. For a look at our competitors, see below.

1T. Philadelphia – Phillies, Sixers, Eagles, Flyers
1T. Boston – Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, Bruins
The Phillies win on the last day of August vaulted them into a 3 way tie for 5th best record in baseball and gave Philadelphia just enough to move into a tie for first place with Boston. As the final days were going by, there was worry that the bad guys would sit alone at the top. This one should remain close throughout as Boston and Philly are the only cities with all 4 teams in playoff position.
The real drama came back in May when the Sixers knocked off the Celtics in 7 games in the playoffs. That win knocked the Celtics back to 9th place as the best of the first round losers while the Sixers climbed to the second round and an 8th place overall finish.
Boston’s big bump from the Super Bowl will disappear for the October standings so the early money should be on Philadelphia
3. Los Angeles – Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers, Rams, Chargers, Kings
LA comes in a close third despite the Clippers and Kings thanks to the Rams NFC Championship loss and the Dodgers being defending World Series Champions and having another strong showing. The Chargers should be better this year but the state of basketball in Tinseltown may be their achillies heal.
4. Denver – Rockies, Nuggets, Broncos, Avalanche
A brutal 4th place finish for Denver which boasts championship contenders in the NBA, NFL, and NHL but then the worst team in baseball. The Rockies are a killer. A 14th place finish by the Rockies would have bagged them the top spot. Sadly though, that awful Rockies record is going to sit there for months dragging them down.
5. Minneapolis – Twins, Wolves, Vikings, Wild
Kind of surprising, right? Minny has quiet competence all across the board even if winning a championship in anything is probably out of the question. The big swing slot is baseball where the Twins are sitting in 20th place but only 3.5 games out of the Wildcard as of publication time. Reaching the playoffs guarantees them top 12 until next April.
6. Detroit – Tigers, Pistons, Lions, Red Wings
Are the Lions the 15th best team in the NFL? Probably not. With the Tigers likely out of the playoff picture, it will be up to the Lions and Pistons to lead any surge in the standings. The Red Wings without franchise anchor Steve Yzerman could be improved as well.
7. Chicago – Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks
The shocking White Sox allow baseball to thrive in the Windy City but it’s not enough to outweigh how bad hockey was last year. Year 4 of Connor Bedard is the big possible change in these standings. If he can bring the Blackhawks to the playoffs and the Bears continue to improve, then Chicago can move into contention.
8. Dallas – Rangers, Mavericks, Cowboys, Stars
The Rangers being close to the playoffs in the weak American League could end up being a huge swing for Dallas, allowing them to jump up from the bottom half of the league to the Top-12 or better. That combined with possible early season turnarounds for the Cowboys and Mavericks could make for a big jump in the standings by November.
9. San Francisco – Giants, Warriors, 49ers, Sharks
Sports in SF are not what they were a few years ago. The 49ers are going to finish 3rd in their own stacked division, the Warriors are only a borderline playoff team, and the Giants are a disaster. The Sharks have one of the best young players in hockey though, but the team around him isn’t good. If anyone has money on SF, find a new bet.
10. Miami – Marlins, Heat, Dolphins, Panthers
After two years of Stanley Cups, the Panthers fell off a cliff last year due to injury. A rebound for them and the Giannis-led Heat should make things better around here, but the Dolphins still stink. They are much closer to the #1 pick than they are the playoffs and should weigh down any Miami good fortune elsewhere.
11. New York City – Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Giants, Jets, Rangers, Islanders
I know the city is riding high with the Knicks, but no amount of bonus points is going to overcome the collective misery that is the football situation. Hockey is no boon either and the Mets and Nets are disasters, but the Giants and Jets have been perennial doormats for years and will likely continue to drag the city down this whole season.
12. Washington DC – Nationals, Wizards, Commanders, Capitals
YIKES! Washington is the only city with all 4 major pro sports teams to have ZERO teams make the playoffs. The Capitals were at least close, but the rest are total disasters. The Wizards and Nationals at least know they are rebuilding and could be up for decent improvements in their coming seasons, but either making the playoffs even next year would be considered a surprise. The Commanders have no idea what they are doing, but it is the NFL so anything can happen. An improvement in that 26th place finish shouldn’t be hard, but isn’t a given either.
