Considering the NFL went from 14 games to 16 and now to 17, there’s a decent chance that any number of these records could fall any given year. This isn’t baseball where certain numbers are simply unreachable in the modern era. You be the judge…

1. Technically the record is shared with Drew Brees in 2011. More technically though, Manning threw for 1 extra yard than Brees so it isn’t really a tie at all just an undeserved rounding record for Brees ↩︎
2. If you want someone different, Lamar Jackson had a 119.6 rating in 2024 ↩︎
3. The more modern record is 35 by Vinny Testeverde in 1988 who ranks 2nd overall ↩︎
4. The 2019 season of Jameis Winston for the Bucs is one of the more remarkable seasons you will ever get lost in. Famous Jameis threw for 5109 yards, 33 TDs, and 30 picks going 7-9. Amazingly, he had 3 games with 400+ yards, 3 games with 4+ TDs, and 3 games with 4+ picks ↩︎
5. For a less murderous record holder there was the 131.1 by Adrian Peterson in 2012. YIKES! For a less child abuserous record holder there’s Jamal Lewis at 129.1 back in 2003. That’s no good. Let’s just go with Barry Sanders at 9th all time with 128.3 in 1997 ↩︎
6. For Eagles fans wondering where Saquon Barkley ranks, his 2024 season was at 125.3, good for 14th best all time. ↩︎
7. He beat the 22 set by Jerry Rice in 1987. However, Rice set that mark in a strike shortened 12 game season. ↩︎

9. Before Johnson, the previous record was 1848 by Jerry Rice in 1995. That season 5 players went over 1497 yards. ↩︎
10. This is kind of cheating. Wes Chandler technically has the record at 129 yards per game in 1982 but that was only in 8 games. Charley Hennigan is next back in 1961 but that was in the AFL. Elroy Hirsh is after him at 124.6 in 1951, but that’s in 12 games. I should probably count that one, but here we are in a footnote and I am not going back ↩︎

13. It’s crazy to think that until 2013, the record was 63 yards set in 1970 by Tom Dempsey. Back then, the goalposts were at the goal line so he lined up from his own 37! The record before that was also Dempsey the year before at just 55 yards who tied George Blanda’s 55 set in 1961. ↩︎
14. Like Jerry Rice, Reggie White had 21 sacks in just 12 games in 1987 ↩︎
15. Since sacks are only official since 1982, this does not count the 23 by Al Baker back in 1978 ↩︎
16. This is where the term “peanut punch” came from because Tillman’s nickname is Peanut ↩︎
