4 for 4 November: Round 3

3–5 minutes

Welcome to the first annual 4 For 4 challenge pitting the nation’s 12 cities with all 4 major professional sports teams against one another to see who is best. Scoring is simple. We take the records of each team to see where they are in the standings, factor in playoff positioning, give a bonus point for being a champion, and see who averages out the best. Results will be posted at the first of every month then averaged out at the end to see which team is the best. For a look at our competitors, see below.

1. Boston – Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, Bruins

Boston is back up to #1 thanks to hot starts from the Bruins and Celtics, leading just a solid all around effort. The Red Sox bank a solid 9th place finish for the next few months with their first round playoff exit.

2. Minneapolis – Twins, Wolves, Vikings, Wild

Minny stays at #2 thanks to the Vikings not being a fluke and the Wild getting the most out of all their star power. It’s too bad about Anthony Edwards injury and the Twins not making the playoffs though. Just getting in would have meant 9th instead of 19th.

3. Detroit – Tigers, Pistons, Lions, Red Wings

Detroit is one of the biggest movers, going from 6th to 3rd thanks to the Pistons picking up where they left off and the Lions having what looks to be a bounce back season. If only the Red Wings could ever get their act together.

4. Dallas – Rangers, Mavericks, Cowboys, Stars

Going from 8th to 4th is no joke, especially with the Cowboys dead in the water. Who would have thought the Mavericks would be the city pace setter come November?

5. Denver – Rockies, Nuggets, Broncos, Avalanche

The Broncos are keeping pace at the top of the NFL, but the Nuggets and Avalanche are surprisingly just middling. All of them need to be exceptional to make up for the doormat Rockies though who actually improved a ton but still finished worst in the league

6. San Francisco – Giants, Warriors, 49ers, Sharks

The Warriors lifted the city spirits and now join the 49ers in bring competency to the Bay area. The lost Giants season is going to be a killer.

7. Philadelphia – Phillies, Sixers, Eagles, Flyers

The fall had to stop sometime, from back to back #1s all the way down to #7. It was like “Sending Our Love Down the Well” in the Simpsons after it turned out Bart faked Timmy O’Toole. Anyway, the Eagles are a lost cause this season and the Flyers have started so shamefully that this might be more of a permanent demotion than you would think. Really everything is riding on the Sixers in every way right now.

8. Chicago – Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks

What a sports dichotomy going on in the Windy City! Baseball and the Bears are phenomenal while the Bulls and Blackhawks flat out stink (and should stay that way). Even a Super Bowl run won’t really help things unless hockey and basketball can turn competent.

9. Los Angeles – Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers, Rams, Chargers, Kings

From 4th all the way down to 9th thanks to miserable starts for the Clippers, Chargers, and Kings. Of course, the Rams were expected to be at the top of the league too and the Dodgers lost the city its bonus point by getting boat raced by the Brewers. Not a great month!

10. Miami – Marlins, Heat, Dolphins, Panthers

Other than the Panthers getting back to business, nothing is going particularly well in Miami. The Marlins were fine, the Heat are underachieving, and the Dolphins are — as always — the Dolphins.

11. New York City – Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, Giants, Jets, Rangers, Islanders

YIKES! It is the Yankees and then the rest of the city right now. Even the Knicks are off to a rough start despite being defending champs. The Giants are going to end up winning the division though and that will help them in these rankings once the playoffs start. Everyone else, best of luck.

12. Washington DC – Nationals, Wizards, Commanders, Capitals

Washington ends up last thanks to the Knicks bonus point. Honestly though, all of their teams are probably doing slightly better than they thought they would, especially the middle of the league Wizards. They are in good position to make a solid leap next month.
