As the Eagles defense was repeatedly run over and the offense barely made an effort to succeed, I couldn’t help but think I’ve seen this game before. The score was closer than in 2023, but today’s loss to the Bears was the 2025 equivalent of the embarrassment we received from the 49ers two years ago. I’ve never been more sure that a good team was dead than after that game and we were 10-2. We are now 8-4 and I feel the same way.
The stakes were just as high in this one. Back then we were coming off a Super Bowl and kept telling ourselves that we were winning ugly but everything was fine because we were winning. Hell, we had just beaten Buffalo, not unlike the wins over GB and Detroit this month. Then San Francisco exposed us as frauds and we completely turtled under the pressure. We weren’t tough and we did not have any answers. We went from 10-1 to a team that forgot how to play football and you wished could just opt out of the playoffs. Sound familiar?
This Bears game was a disaster and it was a disaster from the very beginning. Just because the Bears inexplicably kept letting Caleb Williams throw instead of just continue to gash us on the ground, doesn’t mean this shouldn’t have been a 30-point loss instead of 9. They exposed us. We ARE frauds. Again.
Despite several straight weeks of the same problems on offense, we continued to not throw the ball down the field, not get receivers open, and not run the ball well at all. Add Jalen Hurts having his worst game of the season and it would have been a loss even if the defense had shown up. It didn’t. The Bears rush offense looked like the Eagles last year. You couldn’t even call the canyons they were running through holes because they were so large. They were running at will.
Is the defense exhausted? Probably. They’ve been on the field in high leverage for a month straight. This game was especially egregious. Time of possession felt like 75/25 and an absolute grind. The Bears are better than we gave them credit for, but they also could barely throw the ball and we were helpless to stop them. That’s a beaten unit.
Why are they beaten? Because the offense doesn’t know what it’s doing even a little bit. This was a bad Jalen Hurts game. He was uncharacteristically errant with his passes and made some bad decisions. I’m not killing him for this though. All you need to know is that down 9 with 3 minutes to go Nick Sirianni opted to go for 2 instead of kicking the extra point. He basically put the game on the line before he had to, leaving the team out to dry if he lost. The play was clearly botched from the beginning and we were dead. It was the wrong call. Maybe kicking was just delaying the inevitable, but the wrong call nonetheless. He’s done it before. Nick has very little responsibility on game day but clock/possession management is one of them. Damn near every time he does the wrong thing.
Kevin Patullo’s time here is over. They won’t fire Nick because he just signed a new contract, but literally anything is better than Patullo and this absurdly bad offense. EVERYTHING is hard. Every offense play we run seems like the difficulty is cranked up to the highest level, like the computer picked your play in Tecmo Bowl. Why are there no yards after catch this year? Because the receivers are barely open. That’s not on them and it’s not on the QB. It’s a poorly designed high school offense created by two men with no idea that they aren’t the smartest guys in the room.
Howie, Jeff, I know you are reading this. This thing is broken. You saw how this story ended 2 years ago. Make the move now. I know we do not have any great options, but we can’t let this season and this title defense die on the vine. I know the record, but we are barely clinging to life here and the guys in charge are going to let us starve.
